Book launch at NAS

 

Venue: National Academy of Sciences (building located at 2101 Constitution Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC. Expected attendees: about 80-100)

 

Total time: approximately 2.5 hours (2.30 pm to 5.00 pm)

 

Detailed schedule:

 2.30 – 2.40 pm: Introduction by Telmo Pievani (Dept. of Biology, University of Padua; book editor): launch of the book and history of the project;

2.40 – 2.50  pm: Niles Eldredge (book editor): video interview with Ilya Temkin;

2.50 – 4.35 pm: Short presentations (15 minutes) by contributors to the Evolutionary Theory book on various aspects of hierarchical approaches to evolutionary theory:

Christie Henry (Editorial Director, Sciences and Social Sciences, The University of Chicago Press) will be special guest.

 

Attendees:  The event is open to general public and press, but is primarily targeted to broad academic audience, primarily students and researches at the major institutions around the Washington DC metropolitan area (e.g., National Museum of Natural History; Howard,  American, George Mason, Georgetown Universities, National Institute of Health).

 

 

September 23 (Friday)

Book launch and open informal workshop at NOVA

 

NOVA (1st part) (tentative)

9-9.30 am: Arrival to Northern Virginia Community college (NOVA, Annandale Campus) [we can help arranging picking up participants from DC by a car].

9,30-11:45am: Internal workshop: among the participants and invited guests (1st part: current issues in the hierarchy theory of evolution): Francesco Suman (Dept.of Biology, University of Padua), Daniel McShea (Duke University), Mihaela Pavlicev (Cincinnati Children’s Hospital) and other external researchers.

12,00-1,15pm: Public seminar/book launch for faculty, students, and general audience:

12,00 – 12,20 am: Introduction by Ilya Tëmkin and Emanuele Serrelli. Niles Eldredge video interview with Ilya Tëmkin;

12,20 – 1,05 pm: Short presentations (10-15 min) by contributors to the Evolutionary Theory book on various aspects of hierarchical approaches to evolutionary theory.

3:00-5:30 pm: Internal workshop, closing remarks: participants and invited guests.  Report about what has been discussed the day before and in the morning and possible research developments related to the Hierarchy Theory; International network; further dissemination; future projects.

6-7 pm: dinner at a local restaurant [Fairfax/Annandale, VA].
