(1) development of hierarchy theory in evolutionary biology in the 1970s-1980s—with its emphasis on ontological issues;

(2) analysis of concrete applications—the better to communicate the rather recondite, abstract subject matter of (1) to evolutionary biologists

(3) suggestions for further work in both (1) and (2).
